                      white linen and
                      small, printed flowers –
                people sitting around the fire –
                      dark-wood legs on
                      and off the rug –
                clever, green wine, smoking –
                      sagged underneath as the feet
                      sometimes shifted with the punch-line –
                but the fear and the guilt –
                      were never mentioned
                      in the nineteen twenties –
