1967
clothes were squeezed
between two rollers –
don’t put them through too bunched up –
and the still-soapy water
poured back into the drum
while out through the open sash window
London clanked and greyed
either side of the Thames

In 1967, thousands of miles away from London, I watched that same process in my grandmother’s house. Thank you for the reminder.

I remember helping my mother do laundry like this before she got a washing machine. I was always tempted to put my fingers through the rollers.

… as long as they weren’t bunched up would they have been OK …?

In reality, no. I pulled my hand back when the rollers started to pull on my fingernails and fingertips.
However, I like to imagine that I would have come through dry, flat and capable of flying like a magic carpet.
