2019, 5*, appearance, architecture, art, cows, Darmstadt, east, empire, history, illusion, life, line, mass, reality, survival, thinking

                so, lowing
                and looking east
                from all the crumbling musculature
                of past empire,
                chewing cud

                ninety nine percent
of all and ever species have become extinct and I
                cannot deconstruct
                the categories-
                enough to read

                the lines and mass
                of stijl, reminds me
that I try to be far too clever trying to read
                despite all
                depiction

                                                                                travel

                                                                                noticing
at all is a product of
                                                                shifted perspective
                                                                related to behold;

                                                                when I’ve nothing to write
                                                                I’ve lost any perspective,
                                                                cornered by both these walls
                                                                I’ve walked along

                when I die
this mind will no longer whorl about this pinchèd self
in a world of diminished return and profusion of iteration

                                                                cranes atop
pulling them further up and up
from the ground on which they
                                                                balance on receding point;

                                                                communities of them
each taller than the last and the next
                                                                all along the wharfs
                                                                of endless account

                it will be expansive
high and up in industrial and sandstone sky
it will fathom all the deep of brown kelp in shifting purple

                                                                kilometres long
                                                                courses of brick
                                                                grimed black and utility-studded
                                                                updown onoff foothold and wire

                                                                ripple along nicely
                                                                across right-angled centuries
                                                                and occasional shot bolts
                                                                of deepest russian vine

                with no sound
save diminishing echoes of a pleading late self
having nothing left to refer to and nothing left to here, and

                                                                believe it or not
                                                                a rainbow exponential
to the white arch of Wembley
                                                                we’ll chase for miles

                                                                orange shimmering to
                                                                magenta through staccato tides
                                                                out and over flat roofs
                                                                on and into the fields

                all data wiped –
suds off my hands from my shoulders –
and did I back enough up for some grander vector to reach?

                                                                where trees grow from ground
                                                                shaping over decades
                                                                green-flamed cupolas
                                                                clamped to the sky

                                                                and from perspective passing
                                                                of open field
                                                                turn – creak –
                                                                the whole world

                I may well
have built pillars of cleverness and thought:
plinthed, fluted, capitaled and giddyingly architraved …

                                                                and there
                                                                Lancashire red brick
                                                                with high and whitey
                                                                sills stale and lintel

                                                                before washed-out
                                                                sapphire-afternoon of steely sky
                                                                and horizontal fingers of
                                                                scud-rain

                … but they’d just
floated there upright in space ‘neither use nor ornament’
straining on the string in my baby-fat hands, I’ve

                                never really
                                made stuff happen
                                and didn’t have to try

more than let more and more
                                of stuff happening anyway
                                happen through me

2019, 6*, anger, animals, architecture, Bodhisattvacharyavatara, collapse, corner, dream, fireplace, lintel, moss, pediment, pillars, ruin, settlement, sound, stone, thought, trees, walls, weight, windows

“And anger it is that lays in ruins
                                  every kind of mental goodness.”

crunch what have I stepped on
                cracked, hollow, all about, what

                is this square stone pediment
skewed and in the way, no, not

                square, this moss has rounded
the corner, and here is a

                pillar (where’s the arch, where’s
                the other pillar) all concussed

and made of cone it seems,
                it must have just collapsed

one day, couldn’t hold the weight,
                maybe someone took the

                other pillar, maybe the lintel
                just shattered and got walked over;

but no walls here, just that
                mound over there, I could

climb the side, there are steps, oh,
it was the fireplace, all that rubble

has filled the hearth and …
this was the back wall, here

is a corner of a window space,
but there are just trees to see

now, was it cleared here once,
                did they keep animals milling

                about, were they comfortable,
                did they have dreams …?

a wistful from Bodhisattvacharyavatara VI, verse 7: “Encountering that which I fear or do not want, and obstructed or frustrated in obtaining what I want, these provide the fuels of discontent, of unhappiness, of irritation. They smoulder and then flare-up, spreading within me. I become built-up and headstrong with anger which eats away inside and will eventually consume me and the toxic world I have created for myself.” The title-quote is from “The Nectar of Mañjuśrī’s Speech”, a commentary to the Bodhisattvacharyavatara by Kunzang Palden.

1872, 2018, 6*, adulthood, afternoon, air, architecture, brown, childhood, chimney pots, cottage, flame, flight, future, grey, hill, horizon, life, lime, orange, Pontoise, red, rooks, silence, smoke, sunset, town, trees, walls

over the roll of hill the town
                of Pontoise reared architecture

                of afternoon-future, grey and
soupy air where I will try my

life later, but here the sun
                has set, kindled treetops with

                lime air, blazed the tree
across the road to brown and

                orange flame,
                until the rooks could take

                no more, split, singed and
                away in array before the

                silence of the cottage wall
                wide and orange with the

                lazy smoke, and modest
                from the blood-red pots

right there, from La Route, Effet d’Hiver, 1872 by Camille Pissarro (… actually, better if you could see the original)

                prologue

the fetch of uneventful league to
                mingle with pier piles nonchalant;

                the borderline lightbulbs strung for
                decades between promenade lamp

and stack of height and white façade
of black-wrought balcony for where to stay

                setting

                frontage shows the way-to-look-
ing blind to what is seen amid

all the detail of hierarchy, eye
turned to what it hopes, while

                rear windows, set central in
                the shapèd drop, look inward

to find the fit to be; in time
                the rear extension of amenity

                cut fresh cross-sections of life
                turned 90° deep with windows

                unadorned; but then
                were added storey, creating alley

                to hidden access whenever
                contemplating the corners

                that encourage right angle
                where you can serve your

                down and truncating down-
                pipe blind to abutted wall

                perambulation

                                but, I’m in luck

                eye caught by extractor flaps
                in the foreground venting downwards

                venting upwards, sun neatly off
                the downpipes to the right

on the left long-painted white pipes
rusting, and between, a leafing tree

                undecided which way to lean
                the background, the monolith back

                of the seafront hotel, conditioning
air; later, passing the backs of

                houses-become-their-own-entrance,
                seagulls perched at rest

                on the chimneys, I caught
the tail of a reg-D Cortina with

                burgundy-deep fins and round
                tripartite lights, smaller

                than I remember

                epilogue

                oh, yes and a Persian-blue
                chimney stack with off-white pots

                under sky-blue sky
                and wisps of cloud
