1967, 2018, 5*, avenue, Batman, buildings, cape, contemplation, cowl, dark, night, passing, skyline, tree, white

                past avenues of uprise
                one can only prowl intent

                but oblivious, there may be
                clean white skylines under

                the darkest nights but
                contemplation under cowl

                or tree foreshortens
the sweep of the deepest cape

Detective Comics #370, Dec 1967, writing John Broome, art Sheldon Moldoff

1968, 2018, 5*, architecture, avenue, Batman, being, feet, Gil Kane, height, line, perspective, right angle, shops, view

                lines recede long
                down both flanks of avenue

                selling hats, jeans
and deli; but leap deep into

                the perspective cut
almost 90° to the rite of way

                and flying traces
of the soles of your feet find

                levels of stepped architecture
                pediment to behold

there was the house on the higher land

the rough stone frame between thought
and act, the lattice glass through which
                to understand where we are

that bridge the languid nude that

and the chiselled abdomen and arm

and at the heart the restored crushed

1960s, 1968, 2014, 5*, air, avenue, blue, breeze, buildings, Burt Bacharach, bus, city, Dionne Warwick, direction, lemon, life, lime, mauve, mist, morning, openness, possibility, roads, sky, white, years

                      1968

                      the rear of the bus
moved out of the scene – whitened blue

                      the wide open spring air
reached between buildings – to grimy lime

                      and avenues rolled down
in every direction – through flash lemon

                      bolts of mist and haze
across each intersection – and ankle mauve

                      and slightly too little
worn – for the morning shift of breezes

promises promises – more Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach sustaining another burst of breath-takingly open and naïve possibility from the later 60s

it is always the willed renege
                that let’s the face dislocate-
                hideous in full disclosure
                when implications emerge

                that the mouth no longer
                forms, the nostrils lose
                their boundary, the eyes no
                longer level, that the body

                fulfils its natural grace to
                tend to travel where point
                is cornered without street
                to edge and dwelling stands

                familiar as brick but
                stacked in storey and cipher
                whence cones and bolts will
                manifest but unoriginate

                `till squint is healed and
                morning cloud will shred
                the evening sun between
                traffic lights and broad avenue
