2022, 20th century, 8*, afternoon, banshee, blood, blue, brown, capitalism, Carol, childhood, dream, eyes, faces, fields, garden, gold, growing, history, landscape, life, maelstrom, measure, mist, object, objectification, orange, plane, production, sapphire, sky, sound, space, storm, summer, sweet, time, whorl, World War I

                                                the inevitable tock

                        this queasy land
life out of time, this dreamscape
                        with waist-high mist

and then a uni-prop dhrined straight across the sky one endless summer gardenoon

                        made a whorl
                        brown and bloody fields
                        and jar-sweet marmalade

                        wherein history appeared
                        as proliferated objects
                        space now only a measure

                        the face appears
in the eye of the storm
                        tarnished blue and palsy

                        measuring gossamer gold
                        between always-contestable markers
                        from an impossible sapphire cap

                        only retrospectively glimpsed now
                        as screaming banshees
                        back in the maelstrom

when we close our eyes

time by Carol Redford; used with permission – thank you

                                                                                travel

                                                                                noticing
at all is a product of
                                                                shifted perspective
                                                                related to behold;

                                                                when I’ve nothing to write
                                                                I’ve lost any perspective,
                                                                cornered by both these walls
                                                                I’ve walked along

                when I die
this mind will no longer whorl about this pinchèd self
in a world of diminished return and profusion of iteration

                                                                cranes atop
pulling them further up and up
from the ground on which they
                                                                balance on receding point;

                                                                communities of them
each taller than the last and the next
                                                                all along the wharfs
                                                                of endless account

                it will be expansive
high and up in industrial and sandstone sky
it will fathom all the deep of brown kelp in shifting purple

                                                                kilometres long
                                                                courses of brick
                                                                grimed black and utility-studded
                                                                updown onoff foothold and wire

                                                                ripple along nicely
                                                                across right-angled centuries
                                                                and occasional shot bolts
                                                                of deepest russian vine

                with no sound
save diminishing echoes of a pleading late self
having nothing left to refer to and nothing left to here, and

                                                                believe it or not
                                                                a rainbow exponential
to the white arch of Wembley
                                                                we’ll chase for miles

                                                                orange shimmering to
                                                                magenta through staccato tides
                                                                out and over flat roofs
                                                                on and into the fields

                all data wiped –
suds off my hands from my shoulders –
and did I back enough up for some grander vector to reach?

                                                                where trees grow from ground
                                                                shaping over decades
                                                                green-flamed cupolas
                                                                clamped to the sky

                                                                and from perspective passing
                                                                of open field
                                                                turn – creak –
                                                                the whole world

                I may well
have built pillars of cleverness and thought:
plinthed, fluted, capitaled and giddyingly architraved …

                                                                and there
                                                                Lancashire red brick
                                                                with high and whitey
                                                                sills stale and lintel

                                                                before washed-out
                                                                sapphire-afternoon of steely sky
                                                                and horizontal fingers of
                                                                scud-rain

                … but they’d just
floated there upright in space ‘neither use nor ornament’
straining on the string in my baby-fat hands, I’ve

                                never really
                                made stuff happen
                                and didn’t have to try

more than let more and more
                                of stuff happening anyway
                                happen through me

train trip; East Sussex to London to Lancaster to Ulverston, Cumbria; where we lived for three years and started a family; stay at Swarthmore Hall; visited Conishead Priory where we lived for 18 months after marriage and graduation; notes and observations on the journey, sense of bridging 32 years of lifetime(s); notes > (maybe) two poems, but two which could nevertheless not be separate, although distinct, like train tracks; three years retired, still processing if I achieved anything in this capitalist and samsaric world …; London centuries old, still processing …; architecture as the stage-scenary of endeavour; the ‘here’ in the 9th stanza is definitely (sic); this is, positive

2018, 5*, being, books, cafe, cake, capitalism, Carol, clothes, living, love, marriage, sponge, stone, water

                                `whappn’d!

                over bakewell tart and
carrot cake in the garden shop
café: what we got now …

                we shed our clothes and
books and find that capitalism no
                longer works; the stone

                will also exhude mineral
                when wet with water from
                the slightly squeezed sponge

on 25th August 1981, Carol and Mark got married in a registry office – in, signed, out within 15 minutes; 37 years later found them in their local garden shop cafe on Ashdown Forest looking at each other across the table … he had been like a stone giving little that was needed, she was like a sponge taking all that was available and still dry …

London refugee march – 120915

                                                there are
                                no economic migrants
                within global capitalism
only refugees

                                                you can’t have
                                a free market without fair-dom
                freedom for the mass
is individual

                the dog
                calmly
                sniffed
                this bit
                of road
                that bit
                below the
                plackards
                and the
                whistles
                on a lead
                past the

just too beautiful
                railings and balconies and
stucco of Picadilly, sun on the sides showing
                                                all the finial of denial

                      not seeing
                      the energy
                      shift and wave
                      underneath

                      I flex in all the
                      wrong places to
                      ground my own
                      earth to stand

                      on, there, there
                      is the precision
                      but then I easily
                      despise my hope

                      and put on weight
                      far too quick to
                      judge and lurch
                      toward vindication

                      it’s just ‘thinking’
                      that makes it so
                      a toddler’s head
                      chatters by your side

                      just let them all be
                      let their bouncing hair
                      be gentleness to the
                      palm of the hand but

                      don’t take them by
                      the hand to lead them
                      through the streets
                      of London, there’s

                      nothing to find in found
                      and always there are
                      smiling deals to make,
                      letting go, in the market

                      place

with each miss, I find my place
with each ad, I play some more
                           with each venture, I diminish

until the far side of town is my mineral self
where my breaths waft across the skyline entropic
to their exponential growth until plagues seem quite feasible

                           now

All the Madmen of the Saviour Machine collapsed into a rogue card with which you could do anything if you let the rules allow … if you let the rules allow

                      where

                                              Have

all the poets gone who sung our hidden sex and soul under tight shirt collars and high-heeled shoes?   Where have all the hippies gone who simply placed the flower in the barrel of the gun pointed at us?   Where have all the socialists gone who testified a simple right again before Account and Product?   Where have all the rebels gone who choked on ‘why’ with their blue suede shoes having found – and lost – True Love?   Where have all the philosophers gone who waded – wastedly – across the currents whether there was a bank or not?   Where have all the novelists gone who picked the threads from the tangled ball and wove tapestries that lined our walls?   Where have all the movies gone that landscaped our journeys with the opening credits and close-upped how lost our lives had become?   The artists?   The visionaries?   The innovators?   The seers?

                      they were there during
                      the fin de siècle
                      during the 20s after
                      the War during the
                      30s as it all descended
                      during the 40s as it
                      all depressed during the
50s as it got all angry
                      during the 60s as it
                      blossomed during the 70s
                      as it …

… career the relevant universities industry are funding silent cuts the noise image message is USP wallpapered chic over fashion everything lies the agenda word point is question proliferated sound- diffuse bite to really semantic but focus the not idea needed is same blanked product because recession there bail is out ‘nothing…’ thank ‘new…’ you bought the package innovation market is forestalled price for outcome lack led of satisfaction purchase guaranteed

and the prophecies are not made
                      anymore because they’ve all
                      come true

                      who owns the word
                      who owns the air
                      who owns thought and speech
                      who owns song and care

                      I certainly don’t but I am aware
                      that somebody does when
                      I reach out and touch
                      and offer there’s always
somebody I have to pay usually
                      whole cadres of them

                      … they’re still thinking and
                      painting they’re still writing
                      and seeing they’re still
                      creating and knowing
                      I suppose, but

                      … they’ve all been
                      Had we’ve all been
                      Had where oh where is
                      everyone
                      now?
