2014, 7*, Batman, branches, buildings, cape, city, cornice, cowl, dawn, dichotomy, edge, facade, identity, leaves, light, moon, rooftops, shadow, silhouette, silver, sky, streetlamp, streets

                above the edges of rooftop
                are ever silhouettes

of taller building and watery tower
by the light of the silvery moon

                sometimes hanging upside down
                will be the Batman

                cape hanging uselessly, otherwise
                he may stand on cornice

and look down on a street lit by lamp
                and throw shadow

over the whole façade – impasse between
                moon and lamp –

                the eternal dichotomy;
outside the city the detail is in the sky

                between branch and leaf
and as dawn approaches the cowl

                and the cape
                will come off

2013, 4*, balcony, buildings, city, columns, cornice, Europe, imperialism, morning, sun, windows

the imperial buildings of Europe stand derelict
except for their columns as the morning sun

edges the cornices and the modern city rises
already awake through the high broken windows

                and balconies

the silent night of the Batman

the silent night of the Batman

                     even while they carried their
                     gift-wrapped parcels and looked
to each other with smiles of belief

                     the shop signs hummed dark
                     against the marbled frontage
                     while above the quiet floors

                     of stone-framed window looked east
looked south all the same in ink-black sky
enough to write a novel in a single sitting

enough to hold a fleet of stars
                     above the skyline stacking slowly;
when the sky turns ink-green the rooftop

                     gathers ink-blue attention and leaps
without step or swing through the
glass and cornice of city vista and

lingering thought to shadow the guilt
to alley the share to streetlamp the fear
and river the rose cast high and wide to the stars

until marzipan fingers reach across the
                     ink-purple sky and marshmallow lights
                     go out

                                                                                 bougainvillea

                                it was the green bench
they had agreed to meet to get the ferry back to Puerto Rico
in the small plaza in Mogan
under the clock that doesn’t work
                                                              at ten to one

                                she waited for hours
                                              after the designated time
different colours piped around each sill and window
                                                              all warm
and the bougainvillea yet just leaf
twining all the archways and cornices
and the shoals of fish at the dock
ever cutting alternate to quotidian wave

                                                              and caught
                                                              at last
                                the last boat home
the sister had already taken the next return
                a year later we returned
the time was still ten to one
                                but this time bougainvillea-pretty
                                                              and calm
