2012, 7*, compassion, detachment, life, love, mind, moment, realisation, relief, settling, sitting, talking to myself, time, true nature

I become better and better at sitting
the more I realise I cannot settle
       even for a moment

and when I realise just how much I cannot settle
       even for a moment,
how the whole of my life is wound round

and weaved through all of my time
all of the time that I cannot settle
       even for a moment,

       what a relief –
all this building all of this plotting all of these clever ripostes –
I can detach from them all

       just for a moment

                 –o–

may I dwell in this my true and only nature
and may no one no one
       be missed out

2016, 5*, air, beauty, beech, blue, branches, detachment, eyes, finches, gaze, leaf, meadow, morning, mouse, seagull, sky, solitude, South Downs, walking

                           when I first walked the
                           slippery grass of the Downs
                           I remained at a distance
                           not wishing to intrude

                           during those mornings
                           when each leaf is etched
                           against the motionless air
of such blue that his eyes

ached to the far edge of
                           the meadow, the furthest
he had ever been by himself –
                           new lands of stubble and

                           bale; a cloud of finches
rose from the ground at the
                           touch of his material gaze:
                           beauty enriched by solitude;

                           along the headland he saw
a tiny mouse disappear as he
looked for it, then he rolled
                           on his back, looked through

the branches of a beech tree
                           to the depth above, tracing
                           the boughs with his fingers,
touch of urgency and echo –

                           gull circling out at sea

2012, 5*, breathing, childhood, detachment, doing, ennui, growth, identity, sitting, talking to myself, wisdom

                                     when I arrive
                           at ennui
or when involved in anything which takes me far away into
                                              the emotional opera …

… use the wisdom I have
                                              naturally
and the wisdom I have nurtured
                                     painfully
and the abstract I breathe quite instinctive –
                           done since childhood
done all the time – and
the wisdom of where-ing while I sit and settle to a relax
                           and field

where I can observe the opera
way back in the cheaper seats
                           not embroiled and
                                              even falling asleep
