1921, 6*, air, ambition, awareness, being, body, breathing, clothes, dream, eight worldly dharmas, feeling, feet, ground, hats, life, living, looking, nose, shoes, sky, talking to myself, Thursday, weight, William Carlos Williams

                                THURSDAY

I have had my dream–like others–
and it has come to nothing, so that
                I remain now carelessly
with feet planted on the ground
and look up at the sky–
                feeling my clothes around me,
the weight of my body in my shoes,
the rim of my hat, air passing in and out
at my nose–and decide to dream no more.

from Sour Grapes, 1921

a song, perhaps, to sing when once one is retired, althout WCW was only in his thirties when he wrote this, which possibly means you don’t have to wait to be broken by the long haul in order to realise the beauty oftheworldwhichcrushesyou is precisely where you stand in it with being rather than reach …; we try to make ourselves so solid and de-fined by what we want rather than what we are, that we are afraid of the openness of the sky that arcs so far away from us, but that when we jump right into it – the ultimate skinny-dip – we feel ourselves so solid on the ground from which we leapt … he wasn’t a showman, old Bull Williams, but he knew his shit, even from the age when you wouldn’t believe it

2018, 7*, anatta, beach, being, blessing, breathing, cheek, distance, feeling, fetch, identity, immanence, Khandro Tsering Chodron, Lanzarote, love, sea, shoulders, thinking, touch, virtue, waves

                                that fetch that waved
                                a thousand miles

                                caressed my shoulders
                                smoothed my cheek

                                makes me feel loved
                                and particular; thinking

                                                of Khandro Tsering Chodron
                I wonder of something far

                                far finer that needs no
                                distance to accumulate while

                                there is nobody to mark
                                its touch, spreads spume

of love everywhere, all for to
                                breathe and to bathe

Khandro Tsering Chödrön (1929-2011) was recognised as a living dakini within Tibetan Buddhism, although she was always uncomfortable with the recognition and resisted being treated as such; she was very influential during her life, not because she taught or was learned or headed an institution, but because she dwelt in (not even exhuded that you might choose to react against it) a blessing and a peace that was completely un-designed, always spontaneous (sic) and as natural as a child’s experience; if anything, she was recognised for her devotion to her Spiritual Guide, even during the 52 years after his death – constant prayer, constant envelopment within the guidance and inspiration given; her presence made it real to believe, and dwell awhile in, the immense power and transformation of subtlety;

                looking back over the tack
and jibe of my life I
                          notice there is
                               a fetch

I stand too much to attention
                     too alert to notice
                          where I am

I reach far too far to get
                     that I cannot have
                          what I am

I eat too much to treat me
                     and deaden
                          what I need

                I exercised too much and
                     stretched the ligaments
                          that contain all my effort

I exercise too little now to realise
                     the strength I have
                          untapped

I have studied too much to
                     know what I think
                          or feel

                                    after all …
                                         but certainly not

                Pilot 125 …

                circular saws twist
and sink to their jagged work

                tattered thighs stagger
between girders – eyes closed over constant face

                … there was
a death but the Douglass Firs shifted

                behind counters and
coffee and Donna just felt … happy

                as all sorts of turns
adjusted; death is the release of looking

that is held too long –
always the Douglass Firs need to shift – looking

                too far ahead
is the death of contact and relationship –

                the fan revolves
in the empty stairwell; looking back into the lens

                for existence is everlasting
and beautiful death; sweat on the plough is

                far bigger than cabin
and home where only the women have poetry

                plumes rise
                like cold apricot flesh

                cascades spread
in chapters while everyone learns to dance the Moose Horn

                                              OK
                                I think I get it:
a nice grey woollen picnic blanket

                                I found the grey
when crossing the road for the umpteenth time
                                safely

                                I felt the wool
when I finally allowed that cars will keep driving
along the road, well where else could they
                                go?

                                I suspect
that there might be a fascinating check design
in the warp and the weft but I am too busy
to explore this now backward and forward across
                                the road

                                there
are some trees and a sunny glen over there
I can spread the blanket wide and enjoy
the meal I carry heavy on my back there
right after I have crossed my hundred thousand children
                                safely

                                one
by one as they pop up to the side of the road, w-hupp, here’s
                                another one

lesson from watching two crane flies work the evening
skating across the panes flying and pushing legs grappling
the glass crossing repulsive over themselves and clinging akimbo
for a rest until lifeless just to get their stickly bodies through to the light

it is so sweet and simple
what I have to do: the keep
of mind on what I do the
                                turning of the lens until
what I am and what I do
                                are so clear and resplendent
that I can see each thread
of the warp and weft of the
                                blue gingham cloth hanging
over the edge of the wicker
                                basket holding speckless-
                                shaped eggs four to welcome
                                us to the holiday cottage

back to Castleton two years on, cool feet on the fresh-laid flooring
fresh breeze through the leaves of the apple tree
but the drop-leaf table in the kitchen
                is mine all mine

                           retirement

                ,             ,                                                       ,  “                                                                     ,                                 ”,         … there

                           had been a murder
I could feel it all around me and
it wasn’t just because there was

mist all about – suggested movement,
sudden stop – and there is
                           no body

                           that I can see
                           no speech balloon of blood
                           from a face’s final cry

                           but a gentle air
where the table is that I
                           use to pound my fists

                           and a swirly smile
that told me so, dispersing and
                           unattributive

retirement #6: here it is, the full story in all of its salacious detail; restricted strictly to those over 18 years of age – warning: graphic violence, with scenes of intent unattribularity

mary-louise-woodhouse

Mary came to visit one year,
I think before Dad left, sense

                of anxiety and visitation to
                get things right; we gathered

in the dining room, she sat
regal in one of those blue

                wing-back chairs to one side
                of the fireplace; they talked

of things and the way things
were while the war built up

and the way things are now,
                we crawled about under the

legs of the chairs while they
                talked, through the tunnels

                to rescue something with
                several teddies in tow; we

kept one of those blue chairs
                when we moved, I remember

sitting in it feeling the coarse
                knap and the horsehair stuffing

                in the lonely bedroom with
my back to the high windows

                anxious about the purpose
to do with my life … is

quite naturally, but unforseeably, this was written quite considerably, and apocryphally, after: green-wine, but then everything knits together eventually

                decade of ever-immanent emergence
but yet womb-like misty with heathland-lime streak

                forefeeling borne and colourful possibility
then birthed starving and naked into too local streets

with all their historynfrastructure; born within
two months of the 1960s, towards the end

I was flowering, but with a knuckle in the
stem below the petal receptacle, made me

always look downwards to the ground: I sit
for hours hunched over a table writing, I sit

for evenings correcting a tendency to
close my eyes, I sit slouched in all manner of

chair reading and reading; it will take decades
of shade and whither before I raise

my face to the startling of light and correct
                my shoulders and abdomen
