2015, 4*, disability, father, garden centre, generations, grandmother, grin, lifetimes, mother, portrait, tangerine

                granny
                tried tangerine jelly with her

but she weren’t having none of that with a
                cheeky grin

                mum and dad
finshed theirs quite quick with a few exchanges

packed up the chair and whirred off
                granny looked back

and returned to stack the plates and cups on the tray
                with a lifetime’s

push up of bottom lip with each place-
                ment

at table 21 in the garden centre thinking to
replicate Hughes’ exercise for Plath about
                the Yew Tree

if I was to say to you
                                “write a poem NOW”
                                what would you lock
                                on to?

                                ‘are you talking to ME
                                …; I only use words
                                for lists complaints
                                reports; what’s the
                                use of poems; I can
                                see colours and hear
                                breezes but I don’t
                                connect them with
                                words’

'scape, 2014, 6*, being, cafe, calm, garden centre, looking, perspective, poetry, rain, sound, windows, writing, yellow

                sat facing into the
                garden centre café
too engineered to make some poetic observation
                                away from where I sit

                                … swap round

sit looking out the window (back
to the lapping of hubbub and plastic clunk and sprintle cutlery and – there it is – the trayk of cups and saucer)
                at the calm
and constant rain falling in a five o’clock direction
                the run-off down the path
                                past the yellow caution plaque

posted while listening to ‘Lazarus‘ by David Bowie, on a darkening mid-afternoon November-day with the overhead lights all on; written over two years previously in the Wych Cross cafe on Ashdown Forest not knowing which way to turn
