2019, 6*, ampitheatre, arch, Chester, compromise, driving, gothic, history, identity, living, mosaic, role, Roman, roundabout, ruin, schoolchildren, settlement, sleep, society, storey, time, traffic lights

                there
                                may
                                                have
                                                                been

                bygone gothic arches
                pointing two three storeys up
                on the traffic-lighted roundabout

                and milling schoolchildren with
                Roman shields marching patchwork
from the rebuilt amphitheatre, I know

but that single vice in perpetuity
above and beyond the call of living
                from which to sleep heavy,

                snug and secure under
                single tattered rank, and ever
                metres deep in tread across

                meticulous tesserae – mosaic
to the measure of all settlement –
was far too much to emerge from with any certainty,

                                looking for the right exit

back from a visit to the midlands; visited Chester for the first time – it’s an old town, back to when it all begannn annnd connnntinnnues…

past the high windows and gothic
                finials of the college

                which kept its knowledge steeped
                like a redbrick afternoon as

                autumn leaves hurried
                like a badly-summoned spirit

'scape, 1966, 2017, 5*, autumn, Batman, branches, cape, cowl, denouement, ears, eyebrow, gothic, house, jaw, presence, speech, thought, trees, white

                           presence

                under the cowl the jaw
                hung free but set while

                pencil-white brows settle
                back into unfathomable

                recesses, like a mournful
                gothic house observed

                behind bare trees in
                autumn, fit to raise the

                pointy ears and swirl
                the cape in ‘scape of

                firm and only and
                spoken dénouement

                                              Trinity Arts

carpet tiles on a concrete floor,
feeling flat but cannot remember why

in the old church arts centre finding
no legacy in doing or creating beside

                dark pink uplight gothic archway
wondering why ever I needed My Day

                hearing Dylan between long blows
of Spanish from the next table like a bebop line far far beyond required staves and clefs who

wrote the songs at the time and
                cannot craft them now whishing

there was less career in my being
                and more breathing
