2018, 6*, being, breathing, cold, day, distraction, finding, growth, hope, inspiration, looking, money, need, not knowing, notebook, purpose, shelf, step, talking to myself, teeth, thrill, walking, windows, zip

                blister on me thumb
so I did the zip right up

to walk around the cold day
to look for finds that I

                knew I no longer need
nor even the thrill of find

                what I hadn’t known
                was there let alone the

                inspiration that I think
                to hold the day worthwhile

                while yet the outbreaths
                follow the in- without

                step or hope under my
                very nose, and I make

                from window to shelf
                distracted the while by

                tugging the zip back down
                over the separated teeth

                before I can reach for
                wallet or note-pad

2016, 8*, air, anatta, birdcall, blue, breathing, Buddha, change, civilisation, dark, earth, echo, finding, glow, groundlessness, impermanence, inspiration, karma, letting go, looking, lost, love, purple, red, shadow, shelf, time

I still look for you on the
                shelves and by the way

                head tilted to one side
                feeling in the shadows

                under foliage between
                stems for something lost

                shining darkly red
                pushing up through

                purple earth – fold of
                blue shadow – I knew

                you’d be here somewhere
                without remembering

                where I’d let you go,
                mutated through cycle

                as wax will wane; and
I know when I find you

                I’ll notice the glow
                where it shouldn’t be

                obvious when discovered –
I knew it! – but now

                my daylight groping is
                done; I have found no

                ground to stand on
I must let you go again,

                my friends, and face
                the only task … alone

                I could track back
                through centuries of

                millennia and tectonic
                inch and breathe the

                same air, amid forming
                civilisations, the only

                air replenishable, as
                the man who strolled

                through parklands and
                birdcall, all possible

                echoes collapsed, and
                I could breathe that

                same heir both in and
                out with diminishing

                return dispersing the
                hanging proliferation of

                ténèbres hautes and
                redoubtable as they may

                seem, as known as I
am not, with all love released

but the mistake of looking around
for the hook       on the beach

and all I find is bait: peoples’ toes and
scars of show the butts and tans of innocence

the tattoos of belong and the passing music of trance
the chest-walk of men the eyes-down of girl

to the bottom of the page
where I find I have written nothing

where it has taken birth / may it not decrease …

2017, 7*, austerity, being, Bodhisattvacharyavatara, conscience, conscientiousness, death, doing, effort, fall, gravity, illusion, inspiration, karma, Lucifer, mind, now, practice, self-cherishing, Shantideva, superhero, talking to myself, time, virtue

                where it has taken birth
may it not decrease … there are

                tiny filaments here and there
                from time to time
                connecting the flexing muscle
further corridors within the firing mind

                it’s not a whole package
                nicely taped up in cardboard
and delivered with a smile, a signature
                and a how-might-I-do-better survey

                it … won’t happen like that;
                here’s where if anywhere
                the austerity takes place
here’s where if anywhere I develop

                gaunt lines of virtue
in my cheek, after the inspiration
                has gone:
just keep on keeping on; if I try super-heroically –

                ag-grandiosely – there is nothing
                to let ‘not decrease’,
                if it does not burn it is not fire;
I am either serious or not

                and if not, I should;
                go back
calm down and create new filaments
                quietly and accordingly

                anything ethical
                should be conducted … only,
not become an eater of conscience
                like Lucifer’s hapless fool

                simply bargaining
with illusion is the loss of its finding … out,
the gravity of the flailing fall
                exponential

                to each and every action
where it will take a long time to gain ground; death
                affords time to practise
now, all the time now, not

                later, not I-did-have-it-but-
                now-I’ve-lost-it … NOW

right-angled out of chapter IV of Shantideva’s Bodhisattvacharyavatara … or in

title-ah-oh-meanwhile-tha-ya-ta

ah

le mot just
the piquant phrase
                                         the simple model rising magnificent
                                         from cavalcades
                                         of stoic tumbling

                                         threads through like
                                         weave which clothes me
                                         presentable to the world …

                                         but no one sees the
                                         emperor’s clothes of
                                         such fine thread it cannot
                                         be seen, no wise child
                                         to point and exclaim
                                         the hang and drape
to put an end to all step –
                                         “look, mummy, that man
                                           is not an emperor!”

oh

less than naked
I am seen right through
                                         adrift of discourse
                                         I step with stubborn countenance,
                                         all the better to
                                         stare myself into existence,

meanwhile

awkward and
hidden away in some attic
                                         lest I lose [what I haven’t
                                         got] self-contained in trembling
                                         vanity, secretive in hope
                                         of things to come, desparate
                                         in tragedy that my grimy
                                         portrait might be seen …

wander, wander
around the flowers, smell
                                         their colour, breathe their
light and let the light rain
                                         fall in shards of rainbow,
                                         cleansing with love –

tha-ya-ta

om     ga – te     ga – te
                                      pa – ra – ga – te
                                                      pa – ra – sam – ga – te
bo – dhi     so – ha

retirement #3 when in Granada … visit the Alhambra, and visit the Generalife gardens … [if you have booked up to three months ahead]; on the walk up to the palaces are trees and shrubs which are plenty-watered by sprinklers, in the morning sun the sprays will often catch a rainbow at their edge; the bordered captions in the poem are comic-conjunctives, there is a beginning, middle and end being told here, folks; the mantra: thaya tha om gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi soha, is the mantra of Prajnaparamita, the Perfection of Wisdom; it can be somewhat semantically translated as “it’s like this: [everything is] gone, gone, completely gone, completely and perfectly gone with no loss, enlightened [dispersed, dispelled] all-right!”; but what’s ‘gone’: “the slings and arrows of outrageous romance” … of one’s self and the whole world positioned awkward to placate its mewling little story, as stolen by Joni Mitchell, who was talking too much at the time, from ‘Willy the Shake’;
