                                                early

                the sun
                blankets flat across the fields

                a glint
                wipes along the banking plane;

                the terton,
settled and comfy in the deepest

                mind, enough
to reach down a text in an

                unknown
                language and read it with ease;

                60 mph
on the lines into town, one long

                finger of
cloud between the sun and train

                ever not
moving; he said he saw no need

                to burden
the world with yet more babble

                from a
                conceptual mind; even now

                looking
                sharp forward through the glass

                approaching
London there is a ripple in the

                glass makes
                the cranes on the rooftops

                twitch

Minoan & Mycenaean Exhibitions in the British Museum

                there was
mass of body the length of recline

                the height
of seat and stone bath the end

                of time,
but the keep of store and brim

                of handle (the
                maximum bulb upon impossible base)

                were lithe
of all action scratched into blackest

                liquid
despite all the belts of mist between

                each day;
and those lintels planted in weight

                upon the
lip of each column and across all, the

                heavenly
                pediment; having was being,

                transcendent
of bound, the message leapt from

                behind,
across the impossible gusts of gap,

                the wrap
of robe, loose and sun-dried to the

                crease of
agitation, there, O beast with power

                standing
over me, will you take me from

                here

early: my son was moving to Germany to live with his girlfriend, he was spending the last week or so with his parents before leaving; there was a sense that this was a Major Life Move both for him (and for us watching a child move to another country … even though he is 31 years old); he wanted to do a ‘final’ trip up to London and took his old man with him, we went up early – I watched the horizontal morning sun over the fields become vertical up London’s sandstone buildings; a “terton” is someone who has developed his or her mind to be subtle-enough to find and decode Buddhist teachings hidden by Guru Padmasambhava in places or in minds so that they will be ‘discovered’ in time when the conditions – and minds – are right: I had just finished the biography of Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro who was a renowned terton and teacher in Tibet who declined to publically reveal many of his found texts because, as he commented, he didn’t want to clutter up peoples’ minds with yet more babble from a “conceptual mind” (although seasoned ‘readers’ of life in Tibet at that time would have ‘understood’ this statement to mean that the prevailing karma of mind in Tibetan society at that time was not up to appreciating them – Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Londro died in 1959, the year the Chinese seized control of Tibet and the religious infrastructure of Tibet was decimated); the Minoan & Mycenaean Exhibitions in the British Museum: we spent most of the time in the British Museum, Jon wanted to have a final look at the early Minoan and later Mycenaean Greek exhibitions … I haven’t fully worked out how these two pieces are joined as a diptych, but present them as such nevertheless

1964, 2016, 6*, bone, Dr Strange, eyes, faces, flame, light, lime, message, purpose, role, Steve Ditko, Strange Tales, thought, windows, words

while little more than bone bends
calcified from the hip to graft with

                hideous and perverse satisfaction
to phemur on which it sits, the

                messenger is sent lumbering clothed
in outsize roles and ragged over

                cross-hatch purpose to breach the
barrier of any window and the light

that it may let fall across all facial
thought – oh, the faltine flames

                that flicker lime between furnished
brow, the words, not seen, but rise

in smokey scapulas, the being in
cross-hatch has frantic eyes, the amulet

has light which cannot be framed –
                turned backs of saddened victory

2013, 4*, accountability, career, compromise, expertise, just saying, listening, managerialism, message, politics, principle, production, public service, responsibility, work

                just saying, is all VII:

the drive to de-power the worker
                in public service; you cannot
                call-the-shots-because-you-are-an-expert
… because you are the worker

if you are calling the shots you must be
a manager of some thing so that
you can then be held accountable
for the shots you call – kept on message.

If You Are not a Manager you Cannot
                Call the Shots. Even if you are a genius;
‘take a responsibility, then we’ll listen
to you’, I wouldn’t on the principle they

wouldn’t listen to, they didn’t listen on the
principle that I had no voice without responsibility
                compromise; de-experting workers
is inexorable to production, in fact

`spolitical

1960s, 2015, 8*, anxiety, bay window, black, childhood, collecting, comics, doing, doors, dream, Edward Hopper, eyes, floorboards, frustration, grey, heart, high, hill, labyrinth, lemon, life, lifetimes, lino, message, moon, morning, numbers, path, pipes, Plumstead, power, reaching, searching, shadow, shops, sky, smell, society, streets, sycamore, Thames, universe, walls, windows, Woolwich, wormhole, writing

dc-gogocheck

that comicbookshop …

where the sidestreets meet together off the highstreets
under slanting shadows down the rear pipework of façades and blackened window
from so much higher up than could never concern us it’s frightening,
the morning after Hopper’s Nighthawks,
is closing down

the ones I try to get to when I find myself done in town
(right after the frustration of trying to get somewhere or the anxiety of trying to
get away from somewhere that always follows me) but never arrive at;
I make my various ways there, I know the routes
like the back of my hand

the ones with warped door stuck at the top or stuck at the bottom
(will the glass pane hold), with step onto lino once lemon and grey with hope
now one with the floorboards sagging under warren of backrooms (forgotten lifetimes
wormholes everywhere) to the pulp of paper and number for finding,
are closing down; I

comicbookshop

should have patronised them more, I suppose;
`still haven’t found that second issue, that elusive fourth, and the stacks
just kept on sliding: lettering and universes pressing their skies and moons into my eyeball
but I couldn’t keep up with them, blinked too soon, have to get on,
things to do, places to be

it’s having a sale, clearing all stock; the sentinels stand impassive
to all find, impassive to all loss, hooded eyes on somefaraway beach;
for old times’ sake I pick some up, figures reaching stanceofopera out of panel,
maybe a sixth issue, maybe an intertextual fanzine, avoid the modern
too defined in detail, too static in marque,

and come away with stash held to heart, out
into the bustle busily in all direction, weak indication and giant message
I’ll work my way uphill by quiet sidestreet past high walls holding sycamores and
bay windows over the river home to catalogue my finds like a labyrinth and
plot their weave like a stanza

                      this velvet coup worming
                      silent and diseased through
                      all possible infrastructure of
                      any manner of public service

                      I was
once good then I refined and developed
                      over 27 years to become
barely satisfactory; my values and value

shadowed away under something, sounded like crisisinourmidst
(New Improved Formula – whiter than white, kills all known germs –
dead) under some hammered-up dry-walling – forgotten and mouldy –
listening to the bish-bash-bosh of Educational Behaviourism

being delivered (reverse lights, hazards, weird-sounding alarm
                      with patently self-obvious message; beware)
and wondering why I cannot control a class the way
I used to when I am not in the same room

but they hammered and they plastered
on time with only the cheapest materials – some nails
bounce out of the batons, some corners crumble, held by noxious sealant
(… oh, I see, Work Experience, Giving Young People a Future)

so that by the time it all comes down
(and it’s … justabouttocracking) the damp
will be all through the bricks and lintels and no one
will remember how to stagger bonding to begin anew …

                      … anymore
