2022, 7*, assertion, Bodhisattvacharyavatara, career, death, elements, empire, identity, leaves, life, mother sentient beings, others, pain, prayer, space, statement, trees, twigs

                                        “…and may the great elements…”

                              they lay on me
the twigs that grew so wilfully
          asserting a different direction

                              the plethora of leaves
                    endless bickering of state-meant
          and chatter

                              and here and there
                    a fallen tree
          carcass of some vainglorious empire

of some untold career to behold
                    (look away, look away);
          they all create new space

                              now their demand and strife
                    are finished
          awaiting the final crunch

come, come to me my darlings
there is so much more that you could be now that
          you have matured

the title is a clip from the prayer of BCA III, 17-22: “And just as the great elements – earth, water and so forth – support the life of sentient beings, so may I too become the foundation of sustenance for all…”

the bitter lament

“may” is a petition – to a god, to God or to ‘let it be’, it doesn’t matter as long as it is beyond ‘self’ – a directing of hearts (the only armaments that don’t cost a nation), a massing of resource (as-yet untapped and unexploited), a manoeuvring of cause and effect (the only true use of science), a discernment of love like the sharpest of flaming swords; “other” is anything or anyone which is not “myself” and, like a tragic farce played out on the widest of stages, cast of a thousand-thousand “myself”-s (hurry – for one aeon only; apply for auditions here), proliferates inponentially to the power of blind-folded distinction; “history” – I don’t want to know the history that led up to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, it is a soap-opera that I have seen “ten times or more”, not sure if “I’ve wrote it ten times or more”, “it’s about to be writ again” and I’ve long since abandoned any hope that an original line is to be found anywhere in the entire web of the universe; “power” is male, but male woefully out of balance, to act, to control, to make, to command on the basis of a wobble-board, the king of the castle chanting empty rhymes, unbalanced with respect to “other” and with respect to what-is without blindfolds, a spoilt child who smirks what he wants, a Johnson who dares what he deceives, a Trump who deceives what he wants, a Putin deceived by empty rhymes, so involuted that even before they think to open their mouths have been lying for generations within centuries; “prayer”, “poem”, “lament” is “female”, which is never mentioned, it is “wisdom” (which is never used), it is the balance to male (which is never considered – ‘too impractical’), it is the reference to “other” and the reference to “what-is” (whether “what-is” is blind-folded or not), it is not the replacement of male (that would make it … male), it is the heart-surge of care empty of all self-reference which, unfortunately, has been left in a cave, somewhere, some say in chains, and entertained with flickering lights on the back-wall, for millennia …

                                silence

                there –
                in the round

                some threw fluting gapes
                three to engulf the fourth

                some were cleaved peacefully
                head from leading shoulder

some wore a chemise, others a shalwar,
others a collar, one a hand-towel draped quickly over the shoulder be back in a minute

one projected flanks like enveloping wings
                unaware as she nodded

her neighbour bathed in the same return, the other sat
                comfortably on nothing at all

                the man held the frame
with perseverance to allow the shape

                the woman privately understood
most of what everyone thought, only the

child contained in the mothers’ arm
                watched the walls dance phantasmagoric

and only the windows let in
                the blue blue sun

Quakers sit in light to worship

2019, 6*, arch, cause and conditionality, compromise, crane, doing, identity, intuition, knowledge, letting go, life, love, not knowing, obscuration, opportunity, others, poessay, scandal, self, shadow, sitting, thought, writing

poessay XI –

                lookitallathisabouttheplace –
both the obscuration and the opportunity difficult
either to see or to take:

                                I don’t know what to do –
                                inject into causality
                                project over condition (whatever

I’m sure that’s not the way to do) –
I can only know what I intuit
                                usually de-spite “I don’t know

                                but will step in line
if you let me join the gang”
                                best served unnoticeable

                                but not really
                                me no matter how deep the cover;
so back to the hunch –

crane reaching from the crumbling arch –
                                written up on giddy foolscap
(given half the chance, or notice)

but this is not me either
                                just a more clever ‘I don’t know’
than all the others who don’t know at all

or know by some rote too lazy
or compromised to know (what I
                                might know) or those who

say they know holding me deficient
that I don’t behave as they know
                                (compromised to behold), or then

there are those who seem to know
despite the prevalence and norm all about
                                from whom I absorb

                                through my very xylem
and then heavy-shadow them all about
                                but they don’t know either

just more mystically or glamorously so
                                until the scandal;
so don’t try to know at all

                                because any of this knowing
                                is just a whorl somewhere
                                within cascading causality

                                making sure my specious self;
                                just let the self go
this knower, this knower so much better and deeper than anyone else who does not even know what is to be known,

                                let it all go
                                and sit with the not-knowing,
                                watching all the fluidity with

                                                                                                piquant love

2019, 6*, anger, Anita Ekberg, fountain, house, identity, La Dolce Vita, others, quiet, sitting, society

look at this one sitting to one side
                smouldering

why does it sit there seething about
                it it it, while others

                get on doing stuff making
                a world-wide society of life

with all of its crowns and repeated
                acts of shame

look at their talent, their love,
                their art, their smile

look at it, indulge in it; in fact,
step into the pool and hold up your hair

under the fountain for all to share
glue-like to the society in which I sit

                quietly in my quiet house

drenched from under Bodhisattvacharyavatara VI, 76-77: [76] If someone is attuned enough to spiritual things to find delight and joy in recognising the appearance of excellent qualities and worth in another and praising them as a good person, and if this makes them happy and draws people close together, why then, oh (sulky) mind, don’t you join in with the recognition as well; why are you not rejoicing too and taking the same delight too? [77] (But isn’t feeling joy and delight an attachment, and therefore bad?) But this pleasure, this delight cultivated through praise of another’s virtue, is an entirely virtuous activity, a spring, a fountain, of joy, which is not prohibited, but, even, a precept, taught by those of Ultimate Quality and Worth, an excellent way to bring people together of which one should take full advantage.

                            1. THE WAITRESS

No wit (and none needed) but
the silence of her ways, grey eyes in
    a depth of black lashes–
The eyes look and the look falls.

There is no way, no way. So close
one may feel the warmth of the cheek and yet there is
    no way.

The benefits of poverty are a roughened skin
    of the hands, the broken
    knuckles, the stained wrists.

                Serious. Not as the others.
All the rest are liars, all but you.
                                        Wait on us.
Wait on us, the hair held back practically
by a net, close behind the ears, at the sides of
    the head. But the eyes–
                            but the mouth, lightly (quickly)
    touched with rouge.

The black dress makes the hair dark, strangely
enough, and the white dress makes it light.
There is a mole under the jaw, low under
    thr right ear–

                And what arms!

                                        The glassruby ring
on the fourth finger of the left hand.

                                        –and the movements
under the scant dress as the weight of the tray
makes the hips shift forward slightly in lifting
    and beginning to walk–

The Nominating Committee presents the following
resolutions, etc. etc. etc. All those
in favor signify by saying, Aye. Contrariminded,
    No.
      Carried.
And aye, and aye, and aye!

And the way the bell-hop runs downstairs:
          ta tuck a
                ta tuck a
                      ta tuck a
                            ta tuck a
                                  ta tuck a
and the gulls in the open window screaming over the slow
    break of the cold waves–

O unlit candle with the soft white
plume, Sunbeam Finest Safety Matches all together in
    a little box–

And the reflections of both in
the mirror and the reflection of the hand, writing
    writing–
                Speak to me of her!-

–and nobody else and nothing else
in the whole city, not an electric sign of shifting
colors, fourfoot daisies and acanthus fronds going from
red to orange, green to blue–forty feet across–

                                        Wait on us, wait
on us with your momentary beauty to be enjoyed by
none of us. Neither by you, certainly,
                                                nor by me.

with love from Poems, 1928

so, how long is a piece of string?

                always somehow, and ever somewhere,
in a thousand different ways and
a thousand different times, I set myself up,

                I set my self up
to be the clever one, to be right in the end, and inevitably,
                like a thousand different echoes,

                someone comes and stands
right in my way, or kneels in a ball behind me while someone else
                shoves me backwards

so that I fall like a prat, and then someone else points
and says ‘ha; ha’ in a thousand different ways; where
                do they all come from,

do they just shimmer out of nowhere
like ghosts just to frustrate me –whooo!–
do they come out of nature,

naturally unjust, naturally evil; are they just there
existing from their own side, like a sharp bend in a long stretch of road
                {oh, come on,

no, they’d have to pre-exist in order to
come into existence, which would involve
a change in something which cannot change

because it is pre-existent, and therefore
causeless, so that it would have to stop being what it is
in order to be what it isn’t,

you know that, don’t you}; no, everything
is conditioned, yes, and nothing stands
                independent by itself, so everything

I have ever done or said or thought
has been conditioned already, ok, but also,
everything I have ever done or said

or thought has also set up a
                whole web of further conditions
which have had, or are nail-tapping waiting to have,

                an impact on other events
and people; and yes, that’s ‘me’ in the corner …:
the endless twists and turns I have made,

and still making with every move and word and thought,
which bind me in, tightly or loosely,
to everything with which I interact –

                completely and utterly tangled:
I hope I acted cleanly and carefully,
                but I’m afraid I didn’t – I’m … going to have to face my

whole knot – a universally big ball,
so much bigger than l’il ole me
that it doesn’t seem to have much to do with me, but it does,
                it, all, does;

and I’d better stop pulling and tugging away at it
to get my own way and
start untangling, and start untangling …

…I had a tangle of garden-wire to sort today; it had been wound round a dispenser but some of it had crossed over, become entangled, yanked, and a whole middle section had come away; then it had been worked on, to untangle it, but impatiently, and without thought, and so whole rolls of it had become furled over and through themselves, some bits were knotted, some bits were hanging out in great loops; being garden-wire, it kinked where it had been bent which also caught other strands as they came close to them in their tangle; and it had been cut for a quick solution, and so I had more than two ends that I could make any sense of; it took time untangling it, it took willing to give up on some progress I had already made on seeing that I’d started too far in, or too peripherally; it meant keeping hold of the thread I was starting with and turning the whole tangle around it, rather than working through the tangle, knowing that I was making problems for myself further down the line but I couldn’t worry about that yet; it meant having to abandon my initial thread sometimes to concentrate on further-on loops before I could return to it released; it meant I had to think ahead a bit to loosen the tangle in all the ways that it would, even if it meant unravelling the newly-wound initial thread I’d already sorted, a little; I had to take a rest every once in a while because I was concentrating too tightly …

                no, these enemies they’ve
been ‘here’ all along, right in the
back of my head, long forgotten,

but from the time I crossed them
                in a thousand different ways
                and a thousand different times,

                they’ve been waiting, relentlessly,
for a body and a circumstance to come together
                to respond:

“there you go, mate, I owed you that”
and inexorably I’d been setting myself up with just the right conditions
                to receive it

Bodhisattvacharyavatara chapter VI, verse 47: Impelled by my actions – [drawn out by circumstance, incited by the heat of the moment, prompted by hearsay, provoked by trigger, instigated by design, mobilised by obligation, shoved by control, summoned by role] – those who cross or hurt me, those who do me wrong just appear, right in my way and do what they have to do. And because of their actions, they will end up fallen and consigned to the infernal realms … surely, isn’t it actually me who have destroyed and damned them, haven’t I just been the mirror to magnify back to them their harm?

and, yes, that is a reference to the REM song, losing … something
