2018, 6*, allowing, being, change, echo, identity, letting go, looking, meaning, mist, Mum, prospect, purpose, putting out, retirement, rhetoric, school, shopping, space, streets, voice, wisdom

                                so I stopped working
in an institution that couldn’t converse within its own rhetoric

                                couldn’t find a voice
to navigate through all that drifting mist, and got lost, so I

                                no longer comb
through shops and streets looking for echoes of a lost chord

                                that would weave
my lives back together (couldn’t find it in all that looking),

                                all that
                                anxious putting-out
and prospect, finding everything changed and nothing done,

                                and no monument
that I was ever really there other than the space through

                                which the change
happened glorious to allow, nothing to behold, everything

                                to be, a lot of
history to let go – it was obstructive of me to try to solidify

                                there anyway,
I should have stayed with the wisdom I inherited before

                                I was born,
allowed the acceptance of my mother’s wisdom: to let be

2015, 6*, accountability, debate, echo, event, future, history, humanity, injustice, Paris, politicians, politics, rhetoric, Syria, terrorism, time, white elephants

there is always always a whole
                history behind every event

                never more so as we
step over rubble into the future

which we build now; and so much
                of politics has become

so deft at skipping the history
                to gainsay the outcome

                that it has become flat
blunt and spade-like for holding, nothing

                to account; history is human
hurt from any injustice and from any experience which persists despite

                the rhetoric (oh, you weren’t
                reaching for the shelves, were you!);

                responding to Paris by
bombing Syria was on the table there-it-was

                a rhetorical knee-jerk
                blind to any history

                hoping for crowd-approval
                like the echoes of a playground brawl;

politics should be sharp and uncomfortable,
                include all difference

                include whatever white elephants are in the room;
                spade (sic) politicians who

will not respond to the white elephant
who will not respond to the history

are left with only the puff of rhetoric
                braying like farmyard animals, looking

ridiculous; air strikes in Syria are ridiculous

there were a number of terrorist attacks in Paris during January 2015; there was debate in the UK about launching an attack on Syria as a response; the Labour leader, Jeremy Corbin, was courting views on the response – I wrote a poem

           just saying, is all IV:

                           the world
                           has become
                           so saturated
                           with rhetoric
that the connection between cause and effect has been lost

                           to strive
                           to put
                           organic
                           discourse
and action in the world is to put yourself ghostly and confusing to the rhetoric

                           my activity
                           at work
                           was non-
                           rhetorical
(even a-rhetorical) even though it was not; nonsense

poessay IX – … just saying, is all II

2013, 5*, career, conformity, consistency, dialogue, education, expectation, managerialism, outcome-led education, poessay, practice, professionalism, rhetoric, speech, teaching, value-bled education, value-led education

poessay IX – … just saying, is all II

                                              listening
to a teacher delivering to his group: “… them’s the rules and regulations … it is vital that … looking smart …”
                                … something about school uniform
                                                              I guess

it is this corporate appearance – led rhetoric in education
which I can no longer even pretend to back
because career-long I have not been able to engage any
                                              dialogue with it

being ‘professional’ has ceased to be a practice
                                              it is now a conformity
                                                              it is now a consistency
                                                                                 no dialogue
                                                                                 just expectation
and we all know what happens to consistency when the lead shifts
                from value-led to outcomes-led
                                (yes … value-bled)

I have not been able to work out a position
                                              behind the rhetoric because
I have not been allowed the ‘give’ (of course the ‘take’ is ‘rivers deep mountains wide’)
                                              the ‘call’
                                and certainly the ‘response’
has been dodged and bluffed like a poker hand

the exercise and practice of teaching professionalism
has been ‘chumped’ up down and sideways
never to be listened to again and again and again
