2019, 6*, balcony, birth, boats, branches, buildings, canopy, death, distance, east, evening, glass, green, harbour, hills, horizon, hovering, impressionism, Lanzarote, life, midday, mist, morning, people, promenade, sea, streetlamp, sunset, time, trees, trunk, walking, water, west

                Puerto del Carmen

                to the east
                in the morning

                the promenade
                ended out at the

                harbour wall beacon,
                occasional impressions

                of couples made
                their way under

                irregular lamps on
                their rusting stems with

                fragile glass bulbs;
                one boat anchored

                out at sea, seemed
                closer than it was

                because the
                horizon is always indistinct;

                then, here at midday, the
                single spindle tree holds

                a canopy intricate
                of branches and peppered-green

                writhe-angled
                to the trunk through which

                storeys and balconies
                can clearly be read;

                in the evening to the
                west, the further

                hills all will hover
                for all the distance

that bolts of mists will allow
and for all the show of

                lowing sun will preview
                blind across the water

                                straight
                                at
                                me

Puerto del Carmen, a stretch, in distance, along the southern coast of Lanzarote, an elongation of time when one is there …

The Crystal Palace, London, 1871

                deep eaves in Sydenham the
                chimney stacks raised high

to draw the draft – splendid
                in counter – front-garden shrubbery

left tangled to riot and dampened
                from autumn, seems stuck in

                foreboding brown conflagration;
                the clean stroke of streetlamp

                under sandened sky will not
be sullied by slimey gas until

after dark – controlled, controlled blue –
but, we read in the right direction:

                look, the flag from some
turgic land of the Empire swaves

away from its pole – the dirty
                heavens cry – the dwarfed

                chimneys, here, their smoke of
                coke and belch drift

                in the same direction conjuring
                transparent edifice where mens’

                seriousness loom in smudged
                silhouette, foreboding to behold,

                and others scuttle about the
                bright, wide street coming

and crossing in all direction –
                pushchairs and carriages to hold

                even while they carried their
                gift-wrapped parcels and looked
to each other with smiles of belief

                the shop signs hummed dark
                against the marbled frontage
                while above, quiet floors of

                clear-dark windows looked east
looked south in the ink-black sky
enough to write a novel in a

                single sitting, enough to hold
a fleet of stars above the skyline
                stacking slowly; when the sky

                is ink-green the rooftop
                gathers ink-blue attention
                and leaps without step or

                swing through the glass and
ledges of city vista, the lingering
                thought to shadow the guilt,

                the alley to streetlamp the
fear, and over the river the rose
cast high and wide to the stars until

                marzipan fingers reach across the
                ink-purple sky and marshmallow lights
                go out

2014, 7*, Batman, branches, buildings, cape, city, cornice, cowl, dawn, dichotomy, edge, facade, identity, leaves, light, moon, rooftops, shadow, silhouette, silver, sky, streetlamp, streets

                above the edges of rooftop
                are ever silhouettes

of taller building and watery tower
by the light of the silvery moon

                sometimes hanging upside down
                will be the Batman

                cape hanging uselessly, otherwise
                he may stand on cornice

and look down on a street lit by lamp
                and throw shadow

over the whole façade – impasse between
                moon and lamp –

                the eternal dichotomy;
outside the city the detail is in the sky

                between branch and leaf
and as dawn approaches the cowl

                and the cape
                will come off

I am so pleased to say that this is the sixth time I have posted this poem, mostly always on Christmas Eve: the poem in which my hero-ego – Batman – doesn’t appear and yet everthing is done by his having been there all along; Batman doesn’t swing across the rooftops, it’s just that we sometimes find the space to change our minds; who is the Santa Claus for the 21st century – Batman (termsandconditionsapply:discussionaboutexistenceis … irrelevant); sculpted out of “The Silent Night of the Batman” in Batman #219 by Gary Friedrich and Neal Adams
