2018, 8*, birds, blue, breeze, Buddha, city, clouds, day, death, departure, eclipse, evening, fire, flame, form, Ganges, gold, grass, green, hills, horizon, India, Kusinagara, life, looking, morning, night, salvation, sleep, sound, speech, stage, step, stone, stream, teaching, time, town, trees, Vaisali, valley, voices, walking, wandering, wondering

the evening before when at length he’d departed,
                Vaiśālī no longer glowed
        like some future city –

                        recent stones of monument
                seemed already unaligned,
        boroughs swallowed by evening hills;

we walked wide by the trees across the Gangetic plain,
                robes flupped with each step,
we lost form as we wandered

and we wondered ‘born but to die’,
                still wanting any intoxication
        before the execution;

                        but he looked, always bittersweet,
to the next horizon – this
        vast and empty stage;

                        in the morning he’d said
‘always bite and heat your gold’ and ‘never
        hold the sword by the blade’;

‘I shall lay between those two trees’
he said in the evening – forks
        around which the whole of time tuned;

                        I prepared grasses about
– I never usually made particular preparations for the night, he would end the day sitting by some copse or stone, away from where we slept glowing like embers,
as we turned through the night –

but he pillowed his head on his hand
                that night, the grasses
        preened green and blue

                        the birds stopped
as if there were eclipse, the trees ignored
        the breeze,

                        and with shaking headdresses
dignitaries came to visit from the town
        supplicating –

but he spoke with a voice like a cloud, both proximate
and spanning valleys, yearning and teaching to lay down this dried and splintered weight, ‘salvation does not come from the mere sight of me’,
        ‘control the mind’ –

and the flames of the fires were low
                as they returned to Kuśinagara
        as if against the stream

Postface Overduction: end of life of the Buddha; narrated by Ananda, close attendant; itinerant life teaching from town to town, area of a few hundred kilometers around central Ganges; left Vaiśālī last, stopped just outside Kuśinagara, town dignitaries came to honour him, had known him before; ‘two trees’ are ‘sal trees‘ tall trunk, no branches until the canopy, northern India, 6th-5th centuries BCE (although there is dispute about this);

'scape, 1833, 2019, 6*, building, ice cream, people, river, society, stone, sun, sunset, town, Turner, water, wheel

                boiled spangle with soft centre

                they came in tents
                they came on wheels
                down to the water’s edge

                all the turrets and span
                of stone were already
                faded with every ice-cream sun

OK … ‘Spangles’ were a boiled sweet, square and dimpled, which suggested a soft centre, but didn’t; their taste was a combination of visual colour and transluscency rather than anything other than sweet; Turner‘s A Town on a River at Sunset, 1833, had the colour of event and the transluscency of time, but also the soft centre of … life-ing

                                                                                earlier,
before the sun suggested the apricot immensity of coming day
                                fill up the sky and

                                                                                deep within

                                like antennae

                                                                                only port towers
of decades stood still and reflected, later, jetties of planks and

                                                                                the sea
like ripples, there were centuries of town and spired symbol, then,
                                to bounder playful sky

prologued from S. Giorgio Maggiore, Early Morning, 1819 & Looking east from the Giudecca: Sunrise, 1819 both by William Turner; did you see the sunsets that morning, was anybody else there …?

                the chatter of rooftops
                scattered under low sun
                about the hill

                the single sustained note
                of the church – the
                passing clatter of

                while weary people

                approach the town
                and quit the town

                silent under sometimes
                bright head-ware

over the roll of hill the town
                of Pontoise reared architecture

                of afternoon-future, grey and
soupy air where I will try my

life later, but here the sun
                has set, kindled treetops with

                lime air, blazed the tree
across the road to brown and

                orange flame,
                until the rooks could take

                no more, split, singed and
                away in array before the

                silence of the cottage wall
                wide and orange with the

                lazy smoke, and modest
                from the blood-red pots

right there, from La Route, Effet d’Hiver, 1872 by Camille Pissarro (… actually, better if you could see the original)

2014, 3*, arrival, blue, experience, explanation, giving, hill, identity, looking, people, poem, reflection, retirement, school, tarmac, teaching, time, town, waking, windows

          dream I

I had to get to school
    from the college halls
    in a town I didn’t know
or what I was doing there

    I was already late
    but making my way
    past blue window reflections
    on honeycomb tarmac

I realised I was going the
wrong way up a hill people looking
at me in my teacher’s clothes they
knew the school is not here

I am in an area I do not know
so I go back down the hill
trying to show that I know
what I am doing I can see

    the whole town spread out
like a city the different areas
    the school is there somewhere
and I need to get myself there

and yet woken up now I’m not so sure I do

          dream II

    my chance to teach
    I explain everything

with little clever phrases like poems
    but each time

I have to explain yet further
    taking hours, not

holding them I gave of my
of my own experience but it wasn’t

    theirs, they started leaving
    before I could conclude

retired now I’m not sure I ever arrived

you know, mark, you can be
too greedy, not from the coffee
or the four DVDs, not from the

                ploughman’s sandwich nor the
pear and peach smoothie, not even
from the bag of fruit jellies that

                now you’ve opened you’re
probably going to have to finish,
but from wanting to carve a poem

out of every damn experience you have
sitting on every damn wall in
every damn town you visit while

every damn person walks past thinking
you’re a bit damn weird … but then,
nah, I don’t quite think so, as long as

you seep into the observation and
don’t ride it through somewhere else,
and you can check the ambition

with enough wide-open love to breathe,
you could sculpt poems out of
the very air where you stay put …

… and, besides, I’m getting one
hell of a sugar-buzz from these
sugar jellies … will I never learn!
