'scape, 2019, 6*, balcony, being, glass, houses, identity, illusion, light, moon, seeing, settee, streetlight, twilight, valley, wanting, writing

        not sure
        I wanted
        the over-
        head light
        on, until

        I noticed
        the grills
        of the bal-
        cony rail
        and the

        streetlights
        down the
        valley (before
        lounge
        lights were

        needed)
and myself
                between the both
        reclined to
        the write on

        the settee
        under a
        double full-
        se moon
        amid glazing

still in my friend’s apartment in Totnes towards being evening

                                only

                from the point of stand
                the dunes are sharp
                against speechless sky

                in passing they rise
                flatly up and up in
                broad brush of land

                blistering from a distant
                sun, in approach they
                are voluptuous cleft

                and hip – raspberry
                stone in orange – the
                Venusian ring-tone

                doesn’t interrupt the
                commentary skip
                across three languages

                                –O___

                OK, the contrast
                between the profiles
                of lifeless heads of lava
                and the twilight-violet sky
of no day and no night
                is beautiful

                but I could
                have spent the day
                amid peoples’ peeks
                and primal landscapes
                open for to behold
                instead …

I used to be lazy and cast wide
                with absently open mouth
                greedy to capture every
                snippet of notice to write:

                finding the secret doorway
                in the b/w reprint vista
                that will be the perspective
with which I will return, noticed

                finding the lingering trill
                and the shifted-chord refrain
across the neck of my guitar
                inexorable in-tangent flight

                finding new twilight between
                turning bare branches in which
                to pace the following
                mornings in strange new worlds;

but it was a laziness difficult
to maintain, this finding of access
                through letting them go …
into awareness – much more alive

                                                surfacing
from a quiet sag – only noticed when
                surfacing amid the twilight sump,

                                                only
the silence of lapping remembered when damp seam and sole
feel cold and slimely green –

                                                still
I do not know my true nature, panicking and gasping,
wanting to float, wanting to hover,

                                                even,
without any buffet at all, without taint, and

2015, 5*, blond, clothes, dark, ears, eating, face, girl, hands, hotel, identity, kitchen, life, night, passing, red, sweat, Sylvia Plath, talking, time, twilight, water, writing

and do your ears burn red, or do you,
washing dishes, with those same clothes
rotting under your armpits, still talk
about visigoths to your pathetic self

and divine nothing?   I put you in a book,
because a girl with blond hair told me
about you one night eating grapes in the
twilight kitchen, the planes of her face

growing darker; two years ago, with those
same clothes, stood in the doorway of the
old hotel watching a girl named Ann, with
wet hair walk beside Lake George; acrid,

now, with the stench of dried sweat and
your long black hair, your hands puffed
and creased from the hot water; tell me,
                do your ears burn red?

2014, 6*, beauty, being, death, evening, kitchen, letter, life, light, Mum, night, sky, sleep, tea, time, twilight, windows

                good going into
                that gentle night

I’d have a cup of tea
                except it’s evening
                and I wouldn’t sleep
                so I just went ahead
                and did the dishes

                the light was fading
                so I cleaned them
                there in the twilight
                and by the time
                they were done,
                the dishes the sky
                the kitchen window
                and the woman in
                the hospital bed 16
                years ago were all
                of the same nature

                … and now I’m back
                to say how beautiful
                the evening is …

2016, 8*, above, air, below, black, breathing, breeze, brown, bull, calf, cause and effect, curtains, dream, earth, east, echo, elm, emptiness, energy, evening, eyes, field, green, grey, head, horizon, Jupiter, leaves, logic, Michael J Redford, moment, momentum, moon, morning, mother, night, nightjar, noise, owl, pattern, purple, questions, quiet, rebirth, roads, shadow, silence, silver, sound, space, stars, thought, time, twilight, ultimate reality, valley, walking, whispers, white

                moment

when the day is done and the green is brown
and shadow is the deeper purple, and when
the earth gives up its warmth to the stars, I
walked one evening, direction of Jupiter to the
darkening east, while the nightjar echoed empty fields

I stood where smaller noises become: dusk
to night, the tethered bull, the calf’s raised head,
the creaking elms, whispers above, stems below,
depths of space; silence; was it Selene within
the lap of dusk or the white barn owl, that

blackened or, then, silver-plated, the night
with a quietude that freed me from the tired eyes
of day to reverie while the planet turned; morning –
it is half past five when I start the milking,
I arrive beforehand with the spaciousness of valley

where breezes end and leaves are still and
no longer conscious of breath and vale; a thought
is born, from one come two, coruscating within
seconds, each one nearer to the vertex of
ultimate truth; the stars in their patterns

out of time; questions asked and answered at
accelerating rate, brutal logic ceding to the
preceding cause – reversal of effect; but the pace
is too much, I flounder and sink as I lose
momentum; but I have brushed the grey curtain

aside and my cup runneth over as the Left hand
lifts the veil on the eastern horizon we are reborn
                with the stripling day; no energy lost, just changed;
the air is scented green along the unused road,
                within a mother’s arms again
