                                zazen

                                              out and about zazen
                                              is throwing out a sheet
                                              so wide it is behind
                                              so strong it stays rooted
so fine it spreads deep into the grain and weave of texture and air
                                and disappears into
                each step I take

            zazen

I don’t look for new things
                                                         I don’t need to create
                                          new things to see
I don’t need to do that sort of work –
                                                         doesn’t work anyway –
                           I need to pay attention
I need to open attention wide-enough
                                          but just enough
to see what is in front of me
to see what is me all along
                                          all the time
                                                         and then
I will find more new things to see than I could shake an eyelid at
there where my eyes are open
                                          here like a pop-up book

                     zazen in everyday life

                                                              zazen in sitting
                                          on a quiet Sunday afternoon
the coolant works round the back of the fridge
                     and the breeze shakes
                     the sunny yellow climber
                     over the iron gateway

on the road cars approach and pass in a hush and
                                          occasional bikes insist
                                          the familiar doppler
sparrows cheep in the trees somewhere
                                                              lost without walls
a tv showcases a sport happening somewhere
                                          lost in the commentary

the open kitchen door closes a bit
                                                                                              the coolant stops

                      adversely
mistaking the finger for the moon
                                again

                      lookithat …

                      I sit down to write
I want to write something good
                after a few minutes I
                      at last
have the bottom-line wisdom to see
                      that nothing
                      is coming
so I leave the date and the empty space
                and go off looking for
                      something else

                      disappointed …

I should have started by stating
                      I had nothing
                      to say
or exploring the tendons of why
                      I had nothing
                      to say
or listening to the silence of
                      having nothing
                      to say
then I would have found whole landscapes
as I emerged from the trees

                      but I sat
                      and I stared
at the empty space under the date
                and felt insufficient
                      and worried
                      and annoyed
                      all together …
                before I ran away
                      after something else

much as I sit meditating …

                                the fall of the curtains
                                folded on the desktop
                                and the constant wondering
                                of airliners

            breathe in acceptingly
                      not laboured not diverted
                and let it out consequently
                                not anxious not nostalgically

            think inclusively
                      not constructively not definitively
                and let it roll wonderingly
                                not directedly not distractedly

            feel widely
                      not discerningly not discriminatorily
                and let it speak lovingly
                                not despairingly not reproachfully

            write naïvely
                      not militantly not formatively
                and let it read naïvely
not with measure not with wealth

            teach alchemically
                      not qualified not quantified
                and let it spread evenly
                                not owned not used

            do all of this sufficiently
not too much not too little
and let it settle as it will
                                free and easy
