                                first day summer
                                holiday service station
                                100 miles away from
                                home thinking I
                                don’t fit in with the
                                way things
                                are played

                always looking
                                fractured
                                cracked
                                                from in at the side

                                green and
                                luminant
                                to behold

                                on the terrace
                                two businessmen sit
                                with ledgers coffees
                                the woman listening

                to one
                                                to the other

                                agreeing
                                the diagram
                                on the table

                                the elder sits back
                                dark suit large ear
                                plump throat tanned
                                skin upturned hand
                                emphasising gently
                                beside the diagram

                slightly gathering
                                like a father

                south horizon

                out on the river
                the purple is shifting

                but in the evening-bulb light
                the world-shaping words

                of grown ups
                is shifting uncontrollably

                but,          no; it’s OK          look
                there is rhythm, there is

                a saxophone, a hi-hat – shflpt –
                in the crack there

                where words sift
                where worlds shift

I submitted this to an online magazine; they didn’t want it; I’ll publish it here again with the copy that supported it:

about the poem: on my eighth birthday (in 1967) my Dad arrived home late from work; my parents had one of their last arguments; my Dad left home that night; I couldn’t remember much of what happened that night – what was said, how much I heard, how much I understood – but I realised that worlds could change quite quickly that night; years later, in 1993, David Bowie recorded ‘south horizon’ on his ‘Buddha of Suburbia’ album, but I didn’t really get to know the piece until 2011; hearing it etched that experience back into my memory – bevelled it up, almost – but it also supplied textures and chord changes to the memory that allowed me a perspective that held me from being just angry or hurt; (‘the river’ is the river Thames; we lived on Shooters Hill in SE London from where we could hear and breathe the river)

author bio: Mark Redford was born in 1959 and grew up in South East London until he bolted to university (like a bat out of hell) in 1979, hot from Margaret Thatcher’s election victory; London was never the same every time he returned back; his mother, who had brought him up with her mother (his Grandmother), died in 1999; since then he has travelled back to London frequently to find the previous 40 years, but only seems to find them when he writes down what he saw; you can see what he sees (possibly better than he can) at: https://mlewisredford.wordpress.com/; if you bump into him there, give him some directions would you?

I am safe in a corner shop (looking for portals on shelves in racks)
evening gathers inside ending-day-busy streetlights just          on

a girl and myself waiting to be served quiet     I am seated     waiting
the girl is fidgeting her shoe drawing her foot out slightly

to see her veined feet the root of her toes; she notices me noticing
and moves to another part of the shop adjusting         something

I am sorry; she has on a yellow dress; she comes back to the counter
stands beside me talking to the shopkeeper adjusting her tights now

plucking them up raising her dress a little, she steps and sits on my lap
without talking without referring to me still talking to the shopkeeper

clean crumpled yellow cotton neck; oh; a little bashful I put my arms
around her waist, she continues to talk engaged in her business

her hands come to rest on my hands on her legs I am embarrassed
but she is comfortable in my lap moving and leaning as she talks

thank you yellow cotton shoulder, now I know what to write
now I know what to do, now I can breathe      deeply, I think I could

sleep now

I become better and better at sitting
the more I realise I cannot settle
       even for a moment

and when I realise just how much I cannot settle
       even for a moment,
how the whole of my life is wound round

and weaved through all of my time
all of the time that I cannot settle
       even for a moment,

       what a relief –
all this building all of this plotting all of these clever ripostes –
I can detach from them all

       just for a moment

                 –o–

may I dwell in this my true and only nature
and may no one no one
       be missed out

                                a colossus
strides effortless across canyons and generation
fed by the needs of billions
engorged enough to consume itself nucleic
                                it speaks with flaming head
                                              unstable
                                too much
too much that it will disperse itself even as it reaches,
                the needs of billions
flooded through a world of veins like
                                                                        pumped
                                                                        yellow
                                                                        fat
the mother is bound the father is blind
and only all the words of worlds
                                                                        will speak
                                              while Strange and Devotion
                                                                        expand through dimensions
grown alarmingly through the stages of their lives
                                              quickly for to get there

                                                                        wanting
                                                                        it      all
                                                                        the son
                                              sits ‘by the blackened wall
he does it all, he thinks he’s died
                                                                                            and gone to heaven’*

I arrive at the garden wall of Eglinton Hill*,
painted yellow, not quite finished; my kids

come out to see me, what has been done
while I was at work (what life went on

while Dad was away, what had been done),
straight into the front living room* – it is a

                                dappled kitchen now, 1960s small-flowered
and yellow-weave table cloth; I wander around

the rooms with the kids, how they have
changed; I rise out of sleep with the grief,

I still feel the hurt, I cannot forgive, I have
high expectations: proud angry and aloof

* childhood home; I was in the front living room where I heard my parents argue for the first and last time

2012, 20th century, age, anatta, beauty, belief, chaos, consolidation, consumerism, Dormammu, Dr Strange, emptiness, Have, health, heart, life, power, society, thought, wealth, world

the last few lines from Doctor Strange I – the trashcan tilted the better to see now the street without which the title [and the poem] of Doctor Strange II … will not make much sense; I post these works in anticipation of the Doctor Strange movie which is due to be released this November/October …

the face in the orb implied
that everything had changed and that
                                                              things
would never be the same again

                                                              II

… things are the same again
                                              always have
                                              always had
the second half of the twentieth century
                                incorporated it
you either had it or you wanted it
either way it fed the corporation
                                              everyone fed the corporation
                                                                                 by wealth by health
                                                                                                            by belief
this is the way things are
dwelt at the very heart of the world
                                                                                                            turning growing fiery
                                there comes a time
when the power and the beauty
                                                                                 become elliptical
                                                                                 to each other
                                                              to themselves
                                                                                                            then chaos will come
                                              you mark my words
thinks the aged Genghis high on the edge of the world
                                                              aged enough in life
to see beyond the self:                                there is nothing there
                there is nothing there

Anyhoo, I wrote a series of poems tracking Doctor Strange through a key set of issues written by Steve Englehart and drawn by Gene Colan; (Dr Strange #6-13 (Feb 1975-April 1976)); these issues are some of the best comics I have ever read; they were also seminal in shaping me to become the significantly un-noticeable writer I have become to this day; I posted them in 2012 and then re-posted them again in 2014 because I thought the film was immanent – it wasn’t; but, dammitall, I like these babies so I’m going to post them again, spread out until November 4th …

you’ve created a RIGHT MESS trying to make it go
and you’ve spent a QUARTER CENTURY trying to make it go

trying to work it out with long division, taking everything apart
to make it go; it just has no value anymore

nothing has any value anymore, no one cares anymore, we are
                all just anxious; dy’know

you said KUE* every lesson, I said don’t be so silly,
I spent five years making it work, I said I’ve made it work

                you said don’t be so silly – it doesn’t influence the statistics;
I have to go to school now and pretend I’m a professional

in all sorts of ways to make it look like it goes,
but it just doesn’t; y’know we’re going to have

to start all over again if we want anything like education in society again,
right back to the drawing board; and no history; let’s see –

oh I could go on and on; and – no offence – but stuff your statistics
and your statuses and your budgets and your slogans

and your privatisation and your reform, screw them up
into one huge ball and throw them

in the bin, and let’s just have some
honest communication now; you, all of you, went wrong

as soon as you thought that public service should be value for money,
(should save money, should make money), but no –

                                               ___don’t go!___
                                business ) public service

a society that is alive, and rugged, makes money
to build public service, not own it, to run public service,

not demand of it, gives service to the public, not a market,
gives life to society, not just consuming it

you lot don’t know the first thing about big society, none of you,
public service should absorb money, it should be

soaked with money, it should lose money: the only reason
money should exist is for public service,

because the service it gives is always far more important
                than a big building and a flag;

so, stop playing your endless games of balance and measure –
you’re wasting far too much human –

                and start saying something alive, start doing something truthful;
                c’mon now, you look ridiculous

* Knowledge Understanding Evaluation

                                                   don’t go!__
                                business ) education

it might well be that the above format won’t make any sense if you are anywhere under the age of 45: it is the revered and ancient way of setting out division calculations in Mathematics; it ‘reads’, “business [divided into] education [=] don’t go”, where you might more readily have “5 [divided into] 60 [=] 12” … the result appears ‘on top’, leaving the space below to do the working out of long division (“17 [divided into] 43.6299 [=] 2.56646470588”; ‘show your working-out, boy’ thwackk)

I first wrote this in 2012 when there was industrial action over teachers’ pay and conditions – just about the time I started completely losing my emotional marbles at work; I have slightly reconfigured the piece and re-posted it on the day that the NUT is taking industrial action over teachers’ workload, pay and budget cuts: what does the government respond: ‘we are spending more than ever on education’!? … ‘show your working-out, girl’ thwackk!!!

                ashramas

I was a child vague in society
only noticed the pretty wrappings of society
as a teenager I was made awkward by society
didn’t understand how to make the play

later I sussed how the play was made
                saw it inauthentic and facile
as a student I studied alternative to society
found that there was love – wisdom – creativity

as a parent I got all grown-up with myself –
‘make practical use of my studies’ –
became a teacher to bring up all my children
play My Part in the society I despaired of, practical and ends-focussed

made the mistake to Make me Mark [groan] instead in society:
influence the means to seek engagement
to find recognition and found myself
                ignored and unnoticed

                Twenty Five Years

now I must return to myself ‘these things that
                you and I suppressed’
carry the wounds as lesson to myself
whether I continue to work or not, as lesson to me

                love – wisdom – creativity

An Ashrama (āśrama) in Hinduism is one of four age-based life stages discussed in ancient and medieval era Indian texts. The four asramas are: Brahmacharya (student), Grihastha (householder), Vanaprastha (retired) and Sannyasa (renunciation). The Ashramas system is one facet of the Dharma concept in Hinduism. (from Wikipedia)

‘these things that you and I suppressed’ is from Joni Mitchell‘s ‘Hejira‘

                                          oh

                                   bittersweet beauty
                                   apartment window

                                   at any stage up the
                                   building façade                dizzy

                                   looking further up
                                   the top receding from

                                   view or yet dwarfed
                                   by another block kept

                                   in place by gigantitude
                                   everything kept in place

                                   by gigantitude; when
                                   young I had an image

                                   of a building so many
                                   floors high pinnacling

                                   to a turret roof and
                                   tiny cars going about

                                   their business, on the
                                   pink cover the blue

                                   cover of insurance
                                   policies my Mum kept,

                                   my mother dead now,
                                the policies came to nothing

"... the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful; it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe to find ashes." ~ Annie Dillard
